About the project
With funding from the U.S. EPA through the National Lab of the Rockies, Vermont Clean Communities (VTCC) will develop two community-driven transportation plans to address accessibility challenges faced by users of the Winooski Valley Park District (WVPD) land, including the Ethan Allen Homestead (Homestead) and Intervale Center. VTCC will collaborate with community organizations and their members by assessing existing transportation infrastructure, traffic patterns, parking counts, and community demographics to identify transportation needs and barriers. VTCC will engage with stakeholders, community members, and city officials to gather input, understand concerns, and develop community-informed transportation plans – one for the Homestead and one for the Intervale Center. VTCCC will explore transportation options to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all community members. The plans will provide a phased implementation strategy that outlines actionable steps, timelines, and resources to secure external funding for implementing strategies.Â

“…these community-driven transportation plans for the Ethan Allen Homestead and the Intervale provide a framework for improving access to two of Burlington’s most important food, cultural, and natural spaces. The Homestead and the Intervale serve as key food access locations, cultural gathering spaces, workplaces, and year-round recreation areas for community members. This process has not only helped partners better understand the barriers to accessing these spaces, but it has also strengthened relationships among partners and fostered new dialogue. Increased coordination between the Intervale and Public Works around road grading, along with deeper collaboration with CCRPC and the DWP Intervale Side Path project, demonstrates the momentum created through this effort. Sustaining this engagement will be essential as we work to identify funding streams and move toward implementation” (42)
